The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
